Independent and Feeling Free! Harmonix Sold!

Well for those of us that have been following the MTV/Harmonix news lately, you know that MTV and Viacom announced back in November that the company was looking to sell its ownership of the Rock Band and Dance Central developer Harmonix......

Sad news in the way of the music gaming space as this seemed to indicated that Viacom no longer sees profit in the music rhythm genera. Not surprising as music rhythm game sales have been declining year over year, and the general consensus among gaming journalists, is due to the oversaturation of the market without further innovation.

It seems like there might be some light at the end of the tunnel for Harmonix. It has now been sold and has once again become and independent developer. Maybe in this way the developer will find a more creative space to create and bring back some inovation to the genera. Here's what the developer posted on its site forums:

"We’re excited to be returning to our roots as an independent and privately owned studio. As for what it means for you, the DLC schedule marches on for Rock Band, we will continue our support of previously released titles and we’re hard at work on some unannounced projects that we think you’re going to be pumped about."

Good to hear, and they seem to be looking to the future, so lets join them. This can only be seen as a positive and a step forward in Harmonix's continued road of success. ROQ wishes them the best.
